Actually, that's just one of the random servers I tried. I'm of course
not 100% sure it's correct and working, but I also tried with
ftp.nl.debian.org, .de.debian.org and even .us.debian.org, all of them
giving the same warning.

I'm currently on debian etch, but downloaded the lenny and sid
debootstrap, which are showing the same behavior (although it seems to
have changed from Packages.gz to Packages.bz2).
Of course there's also the possibility that my machine is broken, and
that the files on the server are correct, but once they end up on the
box, are broken, or something like that. It's currently running
memtest86+ to check for memory errors as I've had some other problems
with Xen that several people are blaming broken memory for.
Although this would still not explain why etch does work, or well, I
haven't been able to reproduce it with etch.
