as promised the tabs vs blanks discussion:

Well, I'd prefer to use tabs (with 8 blanks per tab), too, and
indentation of 4 blanks.

I though don't want to change to current indenting and spacing to
allow easier incorporation of patches.

Although -- if git has a way to allow to easily incorporate patches
against versions with different indenting and spacing, I (and my
editor's devel lock mode ;-) would love to replace nearly all
occurences of 8 blanks by 1 tab.
