[xen-tools] question related to 30-fix-inittab hook

The inittab hook, which changes 'tty[0-9]' to 'console', results in
having no job control in bash upon login (^C, ^Z and stuff don't
work), at least in my case:

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS aloha-domU-1 console

aloha-domU-1 login: root
Linux aloha-domU-1 2.6.16-2-xen-k7 #1 SMP Sun Jul 16 02:14:54 UTC 2006
i686 GNU/Linux

The programs included with the Ubuntu system are free software;
the exact distribution terms for each program are described in the
individual files in /usr/share/doc/*/copyright.

Ubuntu comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by
applicable law.
-bash: no job control in this shell
root at aloha-domU-1:~#

Reverting to 'tty[0-9]' makes the problem vanish.

Is this a known issue?

What's the rationale of the inittab hook?
