"xm shutdown" would probably work. I remember doing that a
few times in the past when I had an unkillable ping running
whilst I was testing broken networking.
I'm sorry that I wasn't more helpful, but I'm finding it hard
to think of a way of getting this right for everybody. Right
now I think you have a solution which works, but if I enable it
for everybody then others will have it broken.
I guess if you were to script your change and add it in
a role then you could make sure it was always applied, but
short of that I can't think of any obvious way forwards.
