there are some packages missing in the installed CentOS System and that prevents yum from running and the authentication system (e.g. passwd) from working. Do the following:

Edit /etc/rinse/centos-5-packages and add
      nss
      nspr
      python-iniparse
      wget

After that you should get a working Centos-5 instance. Centos-4 may be the same problem - I did not figure that out.
