Sorry for late reply.

upgrading my rpm package to a new version fixed rpm2cpio so it no longer spit out corrupted data.

so ether the version i had had a bug, or my rpm2cpio command was corrupted.although i'm pretty sure i tested it on two machines....

it was a pretty new install(days) so making sure i had the newest version of software wasn't in my troubleshooting steps rookie mistake. sorry.
