  Much like your mail being garbled - That makes me imagine
 an encoding or locale issue.  I'd probably suggest you explore
 using different locales to see if you can pin things down a little,
 ultimately while your patch looks good I don't see why it should
 be necessary.

  Perhaps others, with working systems, might be better placed
 to comment.  But I've seen "random question marks" in the past
 and the root cause was always UTF/locale variations...
